‘Direct Folders’ Makes Accessing Deeply Nested Folders a Breeze [Free]

Direct Folders MenuIf you’re like me and prefer to keep files and folders on your hard drive in an organized mess (i.e. a strict hierarchical structure) it may become a severe pain to access deeply buried locations. The golden rule in organization advises not to let folders become nested beyond eight levels, which may seem like a lot at first, but readily becomes trivial as hard-drives and data continue to grow beyond proportion.

Double-click & Go-To

ExplorerWindowTo remedy this, Code Sector has developed a small and free app called ‘Direct Folders’. After installation, you can double-click on an empty space in any Explorer-window (that includes the Desktop) and a list with saved folder locations will appear. This list looks like a regular right-click context-menu and is configurable in any way you prefer. Direct Folders will keep a list of your recently explored locations, which are accessible from the ‘Recent’ window.

Looking up locations in the ‘Open File’-dialog gets easier too, since you can take advantage of Direct Folder there as well.

Tech Headline Watch 9/11

A lot of Apple news today:

  • A showdown of the new Microsoft Zune versus the new iPod Nano and the Classic;
  • iFixit finds an undisclosed Bluetooth chip in the iPod Touch;
  • The freshly released iTunes 8 turns out to BSOD Windows Vista machines;
  • A gallery of the new iPods

Footnote is the Facebook for the dead. RIM (Blackberry) announces it’ll partner with Live Search and the Ubuntu Team has started the development of their next incarnation of Ubuntu Linux, ‘Jaunty Jackalope’ (9.04).

Site update

I’ve finally put out the minor layout adjustments I’ve been working on during the past few weeks. When I first released the Wordpress theme some time ago, I left some unsightly holes in the UI. The theme has been rewritten from the ground up to patch up these inconsistencies and improve usability. This is the first iteration of the new layout and I’ll be continually tweaking it over time to achieve what I ultimately envisioned for this website.

If you have any comments and/or suggestions, feel free (as always) to drop me  a line using the comment form below. I’ll be getting to the About-page ASAP.

Overdue site update

Howdy!

I finally put up the long overdue site update. As you can see (you may want to get out of your shell, if you’re a RSS follower), I’ve changed the way the site looks, again. I’m aware of the fact that some links have disappeared or have become broken. These issues will be resolved over the course of the following days.

Ace on Tech has been dormant for the past month or so, but this will change again, as I’ll be making more time to maintain the site more.

Thanks for passing by,

–Ace

Breaking News Section Fixed

Since I introduced the new design, the Breaking News section on the homepage seemed to be failing. It would display the entry titles somewhat correctly, but the underlying URLs would be messed up. The problem here, I think, is the Wordpress Plugin I’m using, which grabs RSS feeds and parses them from time to time.

I looked into the plugin’s code, but couldn’t find where things went amok, so I threw it out completely [for now]. Instead, I solved it with a bit of Javascript.

Links in the Breaking News section should be fully functional again now.

Scheduled Downtime

I expect the site to be down for several hours later today, as I push through some updates. After that, I’ll also be back daily/regularly with new posts and content.

Hope to see you back soon,

Ace
